| 02. Juni 2005 URGENT Vietnam Alert - Greyhoud Action International www.greyhoundaction.org.uk The only greyhound track in Vietnam, which closed for eight months following the deaths of twelve greyhounds, reopened again on April 23, 2005. The Vung Tau Racetrack hosted a full schedule of races, involving two hundred dogs, to commemorate the event. In August 2004, ten dogs died from their kangaroo-based diet, and two others later contracted kidney disease, amounting to 100 deaths by oisoning over four years at Vung Tau. The track SES operator, Sports Entertainment Services, has now announced plans to bring dog racing to cities such as Ha Noi, HCM City and Can Tho. You can help stop this dangerous expansion by sending letters to the South Vietnamese government. Personal letters, sent by regular mail will be the most effective. Please let the Prime Minister know that dog racing should not be tolerated because it is cruel and inhumane. Let him know that the trend in the UK, United States and in other countries is to close down facilities, not authorize them. Please remember greyhound racing in Asia is greatly dependant on the tourist trade to keep going. Please let the tourist offices in your areas know what you think about greyhound racing in Vietnam. Urge them to contact the Ba Ria Vung Tau Tourist Corporation (details below) asking them to stop greyhound racing in Vietnam as it will no doubt effect the tourist trade. You may like to use the letter below as a model. Sample letter for Vietnam His Excellency Phan Khai I am writing to you regarding greyhound racing in Vietnam. The greyhound racing industry has been in decline for many years especially in the UK and USA where the industry has had massive financial losses. This is for several reasons, the first being that it has been recognised as a cruel sport and banned in many states in the USA and even more recently it has been abolished in South Africa. The second reason is that by far more profitable ventures such as lotteries and casinos have increased in popularity and attracted the public and the tourist trade. The third reason is that greyhound racing attracts and is associated with illegal activities such as the criminal underworld and the use of illegal drugs as continuously exposed by the world media. I therefore urge you to reconsider and not allow greyhound racing in Vietnam. Yours respectfully You can send your letter to:
