Greyhound Awareness Week May 21st - 28th Greyhound Awareness Week May 21st - 28th Greyhound Awareness Week gives an opportunity for all those concerned about the plight of greyhounds to educate the public about the mass slaughter of dogs caused by the greyhound racing industry. With a large enough boycott by ordinary people, the industry can be brought to its knees and the suffering and untimely death of thousands of greyhounds prevented. Street stalls and/or demos will be taking place throughout the country. Anyone who would like to take part, please contact us for leaflets, posters, petition forms etc. Please feel free to forward/crosspost/circulate this message. | 15. Mai 2005 - http://news.bbc.co.uk Greyhound man 'neglected animals' A former greyhound trainer could be banned from keeping animals after admitting causing unnecessary suffering to two dogs. David Cox failed to arrange treatment for the greyhounds which were both suffering serious medical conditions. The animals were destroyed after an RSPCA inspector found them living in "squalid" conditions at Cox's home in Middle Street, Yeovil. Yeovil magistrates adjourned sentence on the 68-year-old until 13 June. Prosecutor David Bell told the court: "This was not deliberate malevolence, but it is the RSPCA's case that he has shown a serious level of disturbing neglect over a long period of time." Tender stomach The court heard that the National Greyhound Racing Club had withdrawn Cox's training licence in 1997 because of the unsatisfactory condition of his premises. The court heard that one of the dogs, 12-year-old Snowy, was having great difficulty walking and had a swollen testicle. Another dog, a 14-year-old female which Cox had not given a name to, had an extremely swollen, tender stomach but was so thin that her spine and pelvic bones were clearly visible, Mr Bell said. Sam Morton, defending, said Cox was no longer keeping any dogs. Outside court, RSPCA inspector Marie Griffiths said the society and local authority had been trying to help Cox for many years. "He chose to ignore us for many years, believing he knew best. It is sad that these animals suffered because of that," she said. |
| 01. Juni 2005 Demo at William Hill AGM GA demo at William Hill AGM - Shareholders urged to reject dog racing Supporters of Greyhound Action, holding banners and placards and accompanied by rescued greyhounds, staged a picket on Thursday, May 19th outside the William Hill AGM at the Covent Garden Exhibition Centre in London, where they leafletted shareholders going into the meeting as part of a campaign to persuade the company to cease its involvement in greyhound racing and concentrate on humane alternatives, such as virtual (computerised) racing, instead. One demonstrator was dressed as the Grim Reaper to draw attention to the mass slaughter of dogs caused by the greyhound racing industry. The demo attracted a considerable amount of publicity, including a piece on Sky News and a lengthy feature on Radio 2's Jeremy Vine Show, which has increased support for our campaign to put an end to commercial greyhound racing. William Hill, Britain's largest bookmaker, already owns two greyhound stadiums (at Sunderland and Newcastle-upon-Tyne) and is rumoured to be about to purchase a third. In addition, the company pours millions of pounds into greyhound racing every year, through its betting-shops, on-line betting and digital racing channel. All this means that William Hill bears a large responsibility for the tragic fate of many thousands of greyhounds that suffer and die at the hands of the dog racing industry every year. With many William Hill shareholders being, almost certainly, unaware of the death and suffering caused by the dog racing industry, we wanted to educate them about this and persuade them that, morally and financially, it would be better for the company to disengage from greyhound racing. Virtual racing is rapidly increasing in popularity, whereas the greyhound racing industry has been in decline, with dozens of tracks closing in recent years - a process that is likely to continue as more and more people become aware of the tragic fate of so many of the dogs involved. For this reason, it would make sound economic sense for William Hill to transfer its resources from live greyhound racing to its virtual equivalent, and thousands of dogs would be spared from suffering and an untimely death in the process. | 03. Juni 2005 - South Devon Greyhound Action Demo 28th May 2005 Greyhound Awareness Week - Newton Abbot demo report Another very successful Greyhound Awareness Week (May 21st - 28th) took place this year, with demos, stalls and other events in many different parts of the country. Below is a report we've received from our South Devon branch of their excellent demo and march in Newton Abbot. Louise & Tony, Greyhound Action www.greyhoundaction.org.uk |
| DOZENS IN PROTEST AGAINST GREYHOUND RACING About fifty people, many of them accompanied by rescued greyhounds and holding banners and placards, staged a demonstration and march in Newton Abbot on Saturday, May 28th, in protest against dog racing. The demonstration was organised by South Devon Greyhound Action in support of Greyhound Awareness week, a national event held every year to educate the public about the suffering and killing of dogs caused by the greyhound racing industry. Helen Stevens from South Devon Greyhound Action said: "We are delighted with the excellent turnout at this event and the huge support we received from the public. "We held a forty-five minute demo outside the Newton Abbot greyhound track and then marched with our dogs, banners and placards to the town centre, where we distributed leaflets to the public and set up an information stall where people queued to sign our petition against greyhound racing. We received well over 100 signatures. "The march, which was accompanied by the solemn beat of a drum, included a funeral procession to highlight the greyhound slaughter, with a life-size coffin and pallbearers, led by a Reverend with the 'Grim Reaper' following behind. Many of the marchers had rescued greyhounds with them and most people taking part wore black attire with purple ribbons in remembrance of all the dogs killed by the greyhound racing industry. "The event was extremely visual and attracted a great deal of attention and sympathy from the public, with a considerable number of passing cars sounding their horns in agreement. "We received excellent coverage of the event from many local newspapers and were interviewed by Gemini FM and Radio Devon. It was a very successful day, the people who took part in the demo were a great crowd and there was a wonderful feeling of unity as we marched together into the town centre. "South Devon Greyhound Action would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who attended the demo on Saturday and for helping to make it such a success. We very much look forward to seeing you all again at future events." | 27. Juni 2005 Campaign launched against William Hill - Day of Action this Saturday, July 2nd Greyhound Action has launched Virtual Virtues, a major campaign to persuade bookmakers to cease their involvement in greyhound racing and concentrate on virtual (computerised) racing instead. First focus of the campaign is William Hill, because they put more money into dog racing than any other bookie. William Hill own two greyhound stadiums (at Sunderland and Newcastle-upon-Tyne) and the company pour millions of pounds into greyhound racing every year, through their betting-shops, on-line betting, digital racing channel and sponsorship of races, such as the Greyhound Derby. All this means that William Hill bear a large responsibility for the tragic fate of many thousands of greyhounds that suffer and die at the hands of the dog racing industry every year. In recent years the greyhound racing industry has been in decline and dozens of tracks have been forced to close. Its unpopularity is certain to increase as the public become more and more aware of the tragic fate of the dogs, and it is inevitable that share-prices of companies involved in dog racing will suffer considerably. On the other hand, virtual racing, which involves no suffering or slaughter, is becoming increasingly popular with punters. We are saying to William Hill that the time has come for them to disengage from live greyhound racing and concentrate instead on the virtual alternative, for the good of the company, its shareholders - and, above all, the dogs. We are calling on the public to boycott William Hill until the company ceases all involvement with the greyhound racing industry. This coming Saturday, July 2nd, to coincide with the William Hill sponsored Greyhound Derby Final, the biggest date in the greyhound racing calendar, we are staging a Day of Action against William Hill. In connection with this, we are calling on our supporters to hold town centre street stalls and pickets outside William Hill betting shops. If you would like to take part, please contact us, as soon as possible, for special "William Kill" leaflets, posters and petition forms, all available free of charge. Please feel free to forward/crosspost/circulate this message. Louise & Tony, Greyhound Action www.greyhoundaction.org.uk |

Dog track helps greyhound rescue Greyhound Rescue Wales took in about 100 dogs last year A south Wales greyhound track held a fundraising day to help rehouse dogs, as animal welfare campaigners hailed improved cooperation with the sport. Greyhound Rescue Wales said its volunteers once faced hostility from the racing fraternity but they were now working together with track owners. The charity staged its annual dog show at the track in Swansea on Monday. Most of the dogs on show were rescued or rehoused after no longer being fit to race through age or injury. They don't want the dogs once they can't race - they just want them as a money making commodity Gwyneth Anthony, who has been a rescue volunteer for eight years and has greyhounds and a lurcher, said: "Over the last few years there has been a lot more cooperation. "When we first started to go to the dog tracks we could feel some people starring daggers at us but now they have got to know us and we have got to know them. "We have built up a wonderful with the track at Fforestfach (Swansea) and at Ystrad Mynyach where they raise a lot of money for us." She said some owners with dogs no longer fit for racing now approach the charity to help get them rehoused and also helped support Greyhound Rescue financially. "Sadly you still get cases like Last Hope," she said. Last Hope was found with its ears cut off and barely alive That case sparked national publicity last year when its owner Andrew Gough was jailed for six-months after the animal had its ears cut off and was left for dead by a footpath on Fochriw Mountain, near Merthyr Tydfil. "They don't want the dogs once they can't race - even if they pups that can't go on the track - they just want them as a money making commodity," said Ms Anthony. "We took in about 100 dogs last year but now owners will phone and ask us and if we don't have the room will look after them until we can take them. "It is nowhere near as bad as it was years ago. "People have also come to come to realise greyhounds make wonderful pets. I have three. A pup, a greyhound who was injured and could no longer race and a lurcher who was found in a shed in Gower. "He was just fed on scraps and was very thin when we first had him. We spent hours just talking to him because he was so nervous. He's a lot better although is still nervous when people make a fuss of him." |
